New Decking For Brackny Bridge, Glenisla - Part Of The Cateran Trail

Brackny Bridge was built in 1824 by John Justice, Dundee, engineer and contractor and is made of wrought-iron pylons, iron rod stays and suspension chains with a wooden deck. It is an extremely rare example of its type and one of the oldest examples in the world. A similar design was used for a bridge built by John Justice at Balmoral the following year in 1823.

Subsequent work is required to carry out sympathetic repairs to the iron work. Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust have discussed all aspects of this work with Historic Environment Scotland, the local community, Angus Council and a specialist engineer.

The decking project was enabled through an award of £33,480 by Avondale Environmental Limited, part of the NPL Group through the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. It was replaced in May 2022 and the bridge re-opened to the public. The bridge itself is on the route of the Cateran Trail and crosses the River Isla at Kirkton of Glenisla.
